Reading Questions #1

How would you define the role of Digital Media in society?

Digital media has transcended being another aspect that makes up a chunk of society into being the backbone contemporary society relies on. Digital media plays the role as the primary source of transmitting and receiving information, surpassing the relevance of printed media. Most everything that is of importance in the Now, such as education, politics, social issues, and entertainment, they're all reliant on the digital media that is being produced and sent out into society through our electronic devices. Digital media cannot merely play a "role" in society, because it might as well be society, or at least the battery that keeps society running.

What is the most valuable piece of digital technology you own?

It's most definitely my smartphone. Although it doesn't nearly have enough memory and storage capacity as my laptop, the smartphone surpasses the laptop in terms of convenience, mobility, and the ability to stay in touch with others through messaging, email, and, of course, phone calling.

What is your greatest frustration with living in a digital world?

A feeling of uncertainty about your place in society. Prior to the explosion of the Information Age, you most likely stayed in one place for most of your life, at work with the same old career, day after day, until you were old enough to retire or pass away. The digital world has made it so that everyone has so much potential, that it's difficult to even parse through it all and figure out what you really want to become. Where do you wanna live in the ten years? It's fairly easy if you have the money, the transportation situation is simple now. What career? Take your pick, you can be anything, and not just what your father, and his father before him, have been doing. The digital world is limitless, but sometimes, as humans, we want limits. It's almost comforting knowing where you stand, and what you can, and cannot, do. It's great that those limits have been removed. but it can be extremely daunting and exhausting.
